The Ministry for Development and UNICEF agreed on areas of cooperation for the restoration of water infrastructure
Deputy Minister for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine Kostiantyn Kovalchuk held a meeting with representatives of UNICEF in Ukraine. The meeting was attended by the Head of Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene, UNICEF in Ukraine, Nicholas Osbert, as well as the organization's specialized experts. The main topic is cooperation in the restoration and modernization of water supply and wastewater systems, which are critically important for providing the population with high-quality drinking water.
During the discussion, Kostiantyn Kovalchuk emphasized the importance of international support in the restoration of critical infrastructure.
"The war has significantly exacerbated the problems of water supply and sanitation in Ukraine. The destruction of infrastructure, power outages, and resource depletion threaten the provision of people with quality drinking water. We need to implement effective policies and planning mechanisms to prevent further deterioration of the situation and ensure the strategic recovery of the industry," he noted.
As a result of the meeting, further possible areas of cooperation were agreed upon:
- Training and advanced training. The UNICEF office will join the organization of training for personnel of water supply and wastewater enterprises on energy efficiency.
- Expert assessment and international experience. UNICEF will participate in the expert analysis of the draft of the State Program for Modernization of Water Supply Systems "Ecoflow". International specialists and specialized institutions will be involved in the assessment to take into account the best international practices.
- Development of information technologies. Together with UNICEF, it is planned to create an information and analytical platform for collecting and analyzing data on the quality of drinking water, the condition of the water supply and wastewater infrastructure. This will allow predicting changes and developing scientifically based recommendations for making management decisions.
- Project management and coordination. It is planned to create special management groups for the implementation of the "Energovoda" Program and the "Ecoflow" Program. These groups will include representatives of the Ministry of Development and international experts.
- Adaptation of legislation to European standards. UNICEF will assist in the development of new regulations and state standards to harmonize Ukrainian legislation with EU requirements.
- Greening of wastewater systems. We agreed to conduct research on improving wastewater treatment technologies, possibilities for their reuse, and analysis of sediments formed at treatment facilities. This is an important step for their further application in agriculture and energy.
Cooperation with UNICEF will contribute to the implementation of modern approaches to water resources management, increasing the efficiency of water supply and wastewater disposal, as well as improving the quality of services for the population.
