A New Border Crossing Point with Hungary has been opened
On April 8, the Zakarpattia region officially opened a new passenger border crossing point, “Velyka Palad – Nagyhódos” with Hungary. The launch of this crossing point, based on temporary infrastructure, is an initiative of the Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, with the support of local authorities and the Office of the President of Ukraine.
Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine – Minister for Development of Communities and Territories Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Minister Serhiy Derkach, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary, Parliamentary State Secretary Levente Magyar, Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Viktor Mykyta and the Head of Zakarpattia Regional State Administration Myroslav Biletskyi attended the launching of the BCP Velyka Palad.
The crossing point is intended to pass passenger vehicles up to 3.5 tons. It will operate daily during daylight hours, from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
“The opening of the ‘Velyka Palad’ border crossing fully aligns with the recently adopted national Border Crossing Infrastructure Development Strategy until 2030. This is a clear step according to our approved plan. The decision to launch a temporary facility on both sides of the border was made jointly with the Hungarian side, ensuring the project's swift implementation. In the future, we plan to build a full-fledged border crossing here. Importantly, this is the first newly opened crossing on the Ukrainian-Hungarian border in several decades. The launch of ‘Velyka Palad’ will significantly contribute to regional development and ease the load on other passenger vehicle crossings,” emphasised Oleksii Kuleba.
During the opening, Deputy Minister Serhiy Derkach thanked the Hungarian side for cooperating in strengthening the border infrastructure. Over the past year, the countries successfully launched traffic for empty trucks at the “Luzhanka – Beregsurány” crossing and prepared “Velyka Palad” for opening. As a result, both sides have fully implemented the latest updates to the bilateral Agreement on Border Crossings.
It is planned that the new checkpoint will be able to cross 200 cars and 600 pedestrians per day. It is expected that “Great Palad” will increase the throughput capacity of the Ukrainian-Hungarian section of the border by 73 thousand cars and 220 thousand pedestrians per year.
To launch the new crossing point, the Service for Restoration and Infrastructure Development in the Zakarpattia region carried out several tasks, including:
- fencing and lighting of the area;
- establishing electricity and water supply systems;
- installing modules for border control personnel and sanitation facilities.
The BCP will have two lanes operating in both entry and exit directions.
As a reminder, in December last year, the “Luzhanka – Beregsurány” crossing with Hungary became accessible for empty trucks over 7.5 tons. Road infrastructure improvements are still underway with the support of the International Organization for Migration. Currently, there are five road border crossings between Ukraine and Hungary. The largest, “Chop – Záhony,” is the only one designated for trucks over 7.5 tons carrying cargo.
